The Riksbank has published a staff memo on how monetary policy affects GDP, unemployment, inflation and exchange rates in ten inflation-targeting small open economies with floating exchange rates. Policy-rate increases typically lower GDP and inflation, raise unemployment and appreciate exchange rates, in line with macroeconomic theory and evidence from larger economies. For Sweden, the memo reports strong pass-through to inflation, driven by tight links between the real economy, the exchange rate and prices, with the exchange rate channel central. Cross-country differences in inflation and unemployment responses reflect transmission elasticities rather than GDP or exchange-rate effects alone.

The authors conclude that changes in inflation expectations and portfolio shifts from stocks to bank deposits account for much of the perceived impact on consumption.
