The U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs published a joint statement from U.S. Sens. Jeanne Shaheen, ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Chuck Schumer, Senate Democratic leader, and Elizabeth Warren, ranking member of the Senate Banking Committee, condemning President Trump’s decision under General License 135 to permit global purchases of Russian diesel for six months. The lawmakers argued that the sanctions relief would support Russia’s war financing and undermine Ukraine, European allies and U.S. national security. They also characterized the decision as inconsistent with bipartisan legislation Congress passed weeks earlier to curb purchases of Russian oil and gas and reduce revenue supporting Russia’s war. Linking the measure to fuel price increases they attributed to the U.S. war with Iran, they called on the president to end that war and tighten restrictions on Russia and entities enabling its war against Ukraine.
