The European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA) has published a supervisory statement setting out areas national supervisors should assess and closely monitor when authorizing and supervising insurers and reinsurers backed by private equity. The statement seeks consistent, risk based supervision across the European Union, covering both assessments before authorization and ongoing oversight. Private equity firms’ growing involvement in insurance over the past decade has brought potential benefits alongside supervisory challenges arising from their business strategies, ownership structures, asset allocations and governance arrangements. The publication follows EIOPA’s February 2026 consultation on supervisory expectations for insurers and reinsurers linked to private equity, moving from proposed expectations to a published supervisory statement.
